TODAY’S SHOWCASE

When I was a little kid I always drew.

I drew for fun. I didn’t have formal art education at the time.

I did take art classes in high school, then I decided to go to an art college.

During my college years, I thought I had to draw challenging things to prove my art skills.

A lot of times I drew characters.

When I drew characters most of the time I had to draw it in a crazy angle like a worm’s eye perspective shot with lots of foreshortening.

You might think—it’s good to challenge yourself.

And I agree.

But if you do it like I did you’re going to make a huge mistake.

I was obsessed with drawing challenging angles and perspectives right from the start.

That along with my desire to be perfect was the recipe for a disaster!

There are 2 big reasons why you should avoid this:

  1. You won’t grow to your true potential

  2. The process of drawing will become more stressful

So what should you do then?

Let me give you an analogy first.

Let’s say it’s really cold outside and you get in your car.

Your car is going to be cold, but you need it to be warm because it’s freezing.

You turn on the hot air to get warm and toasty.

It takes time for your car to warm up though.

This is like drawing.

You need to warm up your skills.

Sure, there may be a few out in the world that don’t need to warm up their skills—but for the most of us we do.

I recommend warming up your skills by choosing these 118 ideas that are easy and fun to draw

I usually draw a few things before I feel like I’m ready.

I feel like I’m in this creative flow, and then I keep drawing.

In short do this:

  1. Choose an idea that is easy and fun to draw

  2. Keep drawing until your motivation to draw grows and grows

  3. Switch gears to draw your more serious or professional drawing task

To be honest, I don’t really use a pencil set that much, but if you’re starting out or doing a lot of shading with pencils then I recommend them.

There are different grades of pencils, and when you’re starting out you don’t know which one you’ll like the most.

Getting an inexpensive but high quality pencil set allows you to try different pencil grades and an assortment of drawing supplies.

Plus this one allows you to work in grey tones with the pencils, black with the charcoals, or add some color with the conte sticks!

I really recommend using watercolors over other painting mediums when it comes to creating quick art.

You’ll deal with less mess. Watercolors are easier to carry around.

Not only does this set come with brushes and paints.

This comes with a swatch card.

Putting your colors on a swatch card can be very therapeutic.

Also, it’s a great and easy creative exercise to warm up your skills.

Have a great day,
Jae
