I'm a big fan of using mental frameworks to help you achieve greater things. One framework called 3-3-3 does this.
This framework has been mentioned by Daniel Sjöstedt, Oliver Burkerman, and Sahil Bloom.
I adapted and changed the framework so that it's relevant to artists and will help you become a better artist.
3-3-3 Method for Artists (Improving Drawing or Painting)
Spend 3 hours on your most important artistic project.
Dedicate this time to the piece of art that means the most to you, whether it's a painting, sketch, or any other form of art. This could be a personal project or a commissioned piece. The key is uninterrupted, focused work.
Complete 3 shorter artistic tasks you've been avoiding.
These could be:
Sketching a quick study of an object or scene.
Trying out a new art technique you've read about.
Organizing your art supplies or cleaning your brushes.
Work on 3 maintenance activities related to your art.
These activities ensure you're well-rounded in your artistic journey:
Spend time researching art history or studying the works of a particular artist.
Update your art portfolio or website.
Engage with the art community, whether it's attending a workshop, joining an online forum, or visiting a gallery.
By following this 3-3-3 framework, you can ensure you're making meaningful progress in your art, tackling tasks you might otherwise avoid, and maintaining a holistic approach to your artistic development.
