A few years ago I was convinced I couldn't draw animals. Every cat I tried looked more like a lumpy potato with ears.
Then I figured out the trick. You don't start with a cat. You start with ovals.
Four of them, actually. Stack them up right and you've already got the bones of a cat before you've drawn a single whisker.
From there it's mostly connecting dots. A curved line here for the neck. Some circles for leg joints. A little indent for the snout. Nothing fancy, just shape by shape until suddenly there's a cat sitting on your page looking back at you.
The last step is my favorite part. You erase the guide shapes and go back in with zigzag lines and squiggles to fake all that fur texture. That's the moment it stops looking like a diagram and starts looking like an actual cat.
